Mapping the Stars: Charting Novellas in Flash

The workshop will cover conception to execution, drawing on examples from different Novellas in flash (including my own) and looking at different styles and subjects. We will look at how a Novella in Flash differs from a novella or a (long) short story or a short novel and how to create the connections between the individual stories, forming a rich mosaic.

Many Novellas in Flash use retrospective and disrupted narratives to tell the stories, as well as a polyphonic (multiple voices) technique. We will consider these approaches, evaluating the strengths and pitfalls. I will introduce the idea of ‘skimming stones’ to move effectively through time whilst not losing depth of characterisation and story.

There will be time for discussion and a range of writing exercises, as well as sharing your work. At the end of the workshop, I will provide a reading list to cover a range of Novellas in Flash.

What Participants Will Take Away

  • Understand what makes a Novella in Flash a unique form
  • Experiment with linking individual chapters
  • Experiment with polyphonic narrative voices
  • Have a reading list to increase knowledge and appreciation of Nifs
  • Have the confidence to embark on a Nif

There will be an optional opportunity to share. Don’t feel like sharing? That’s totally fine.
