Love as Liberation: A Generative, Open-Genre Workshop

In “All About Love,” bell hooks wrote that “there can be no love without justice” and “the moment we choose to love, we begin to move against domination, against oppression…love is the practice of freedom.” Drawing from hooks and other BIPOC feminist writers, participants will explore the theme of love as liberation through mindfulness and self-reflective prompts and learn ways to more skillfully respond to our love, our vulnerabilities, our emotions, and our social justice values and actions.

How is love an action and call for justice? How can healthier interpersonal relationships of all kinds be a source of individual and collective healing? And how can we cultivate a more loving relationship with ourselves?

Participants will also have the opportunity to share their writing and receive verbal feedback on their work from the instructor. Participants can also expect to walk away with a toolkit of writing exercises and new drafts of work in their genre.

What Participants Will Take Away

  • Prompts informed by a BIPOC feminist framework.
  • A space for writers to discuss and share their writing about the intersections of love, relationships, and justice.
  • Verbal feedback from the instructor on writing that is generated during the workshop.

There will be an optional opportunity to share. Don’t feel like sharing? That’s totally fine.

Workshop Level
