Beetle Paws: Writing Micros, Illustrating Micros
This four hour workshop has lots of options.
Just want to know about writing micro fiction or CNF, pieces under 300 words? Attend only the first two hours, with Sage Tyrtle.
Only want to understand the basics of illustrating stories? Attend only the second two hours, with Daegan Lunsford.
Want to write your own micro before lunch, and come back to illustrate it after lunch? Attend both sessions.
Writing Micros
In less than 300 words, capture a world, a character, an idea in such a memorable way that people will be thinking of that piece for a long time after. Participants will learn the power of a micro piece and what to consider when every single word must do the work of ten. Learning from examples and interactive prompts, participants will have the opportunity to write their own micro during the workshop. Just like the tiny adorable paws of a beetle, micros have a much bigger effect than it seems their tiny size could possibly muster.
Illustrating Micros
Learn the basics of illustration from a practicing fine artist and illustrator. Discover how colour, composition, and narrative intersect to create dynamic images. Learn to analyze contemporary and historical illustrative work to better your own understanding of the world of illustration. Participants will have the opportunity to illustrate either a sample micro or a micro of their own, working through the process of thumbnail, sketch, and final image. Participants will learn what makes one illustration a more powerful companion to the writing then another.
Suitable for all levels.
