Speculative Flash

Monsters and Magic – Speculative Elements in Flash Fiction with Deirdre Danklin
In my Monsters and Magic Generative Workshop, students will learn how to incorporate speculative elements into their flash fiction. We will dig a little deeper into common fictional magical systems – is magic the most powerful form of nepotism? – and students will learn a brief literary history of some of our most common pop-culture monsters, including werewolves and vampires, and will learn about the societal fears that they represented at their creation versus what they represent to us now. Students will also learn how to avoid cliches when using monsters – sexy vampires, evil old women, fear of the Other – in favor of twisting the magic on the page into something unique and unexpected. By the end of the workshop, students will create their own brand new modern monster that has something to say to the reality we’re living through right now.

Date June 5, Sunday: 6 AM PDT / 9 AM EDT / 3 PM BST / 6:30 PM IST (see below for time zone map)
